GOWEN is delighted to present a solo exhibition by Italian artist Giuliano Macca (b. 1988, Sicily). Following his inaugural solo show with the gallery at artgenève 2024, the presentation unveils a brand new body of work produced by the artist during a recent period in Modica, Sicily. Originally conceived at the artist™s studio in Amsterdam, the new works were all executed on the Mediterranean island.
Giuliano Macca was born in Noto, Sicily in 1988 and is a graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. En 1996, Heimo Zobernig a réalisé une édition emblématique pour le CEC. À cette époque, Zobernig a joué très librement la carte du fait-main et de l’artisanat. Sa méthode ? Imprimer des pierres lithographiques anciennes, abîmées et cassées. Ces pierres, au nombre de 15, étaient simplement polies, puis enduites d’encre noire, l’impression se limitant à un simple report sur le papier, révélant des formes et des lignes résultats des cassures de ces surfaces modifiées, telles quelles. Ces 15 lithographies étaient réduites à une surface noire, monochrome, tirée chacune à 4 exemplaires, 1 e.a. et 1 H.C. Ces rectangles ou carrés noirs, sur fond blanc, pouvaient directement être associés au carré noir historique de Malevitch, avec toute la distanciation, l’ironie et la malice contenue dans ce geste. Zobernig déconstruit, simplifie, les références historiques du modernisme et du minimalisme auxquels son œuvre est associée. Il les déplace lui-même du côté du design et du graphisme. Les critères techniques d’un artisanat – à l’époque, il s’agissait de la lithographie – sont eux aussi pris au pied de la lettre : une surface enduite d’encre, directement reportée sur une feuille de papier, avec pour seul motif les lignes des cassures de cette série de pierres, trouvées dans un vieux stock, oubliées et inutilisables. Une sorte de jeu avec une situation locale, celle de cet atelier, désuet et d’un autre temps, réactivé dans un esprit ludique.
Matthieu Vertut est né à Bourg-en-Bresse en 1978. Il vit à Genève et exerce sa pratique artistique sous le pseudonyme de «Président Vertut».
Son travail prend le plus souvent la forme d’une autofiction plastique explorant les relations consanguines entre art, économie, politique et vie privée.
Tour à tour chantre d’une économie artistique rationnalisée, escroc impliqué dans des montages douteux au cœur de la crise financière, homme politique et fondateur d’une république de l’extrême milieu, le Président Vertut est, en quelque sorte, le double maléfique de l’artiste, pétri d’éléments autobiographiques et nourri par l’actualité.
Ses travaux ont été montrées par de nombreuses galeries et institutions en Suisse et à l’étranger. Il a été, entre autres, lauréat du Prix du Quartier des Bains à Genève en 2011 et du Prix MAIF pour la sculpture en France en 2013.
En tant que commissaire d’expositions, il est l’auteur d’expositions collectives comme la République à la Villa du Parc à Annemasse en 2014 – à l’occasion de laquelle les artistes furent invités à devenir des ministres au sein d’un pastiche de gouvernement – ou encore Malakoff Mon Amour en 2016, exposition d’artistes suisses romands à la Maison des Arts de Malakoff et le projet Dallas Switzerland avec Cédric Hoareau, série d’installations coups de poing dans l’espace public. En 2019 il a participé à la conception de la première édition de Get A Nerve, alternative turbulente de la foire Art Genève aux côtés d’Elena Montesinos.
Depuis plusieurs années, il se consacre quasi-exclusivement au dessin et à l’illustration et prépare actuellement une bande-dessinée relatant une nouvelle aventure de son personnage.
Cette série de dessins réalisée en 2017 est intitulée Thank You For This Moment et évoque les questionnements d’un dirigeant sur son rapport au monde, à la maladie, aux conventions sociales… Quand dépression économique et nerveuse s’alimentent l’une l’autre.
De nombreux dessins de cette série utilisent des passe-partout aux formes singulières, qui interviennent au cœur de l’image et de la narration.
Matthieu Vertut was born in Bourg-en-Bresse in 1978. He lives in Geneva and conducts his artistic practice under the pseudonym « President Vertut« . His work often takes the form of a plastic autofiction exploring the intricate ties between art, economy, politics, and private life. At times a champion of a rationalized artistic economy, a fraudster embroiled in dubious schemes at the heart of the financial crisis, a politician, and founder of an extreme middle republic, President Vertut is, in a way, the artist’s sinister double—shaped by autobiographical elements and fueled by current events.
His works have been exhibited by numerous galleries and institutions in Switzerland and abroad. Among other accolades, he won the Quartier des Bains Prize in Geneva in 2011 and the MAIF Prize for Sculpture in France in 2013. As a curator, he has authored collective exhibitions such as La République at the Villa du Parc in Annemasse in 2014—where artists were invited to become ministers in a parody of government—and Malakoff Mon Amour in 2016, an exhibition of Swiss Romand artists at the Maison des Arts in Malakoff, as well as the Dallas Switzerland project with Cédric Hoareau, a series of striking public space installations. In 2019, he participated in the creation of the first edition of Get A Nerve, a turbulent alternative to the Art Genève fair, alongside Elena Montesinos.
In recent years, he has devoted himself almost exclusively to drawing and illustration and is currently preparing a graphic novel recounting a new adventure of his character.
This series of drawings, created in 2017, is titled Thank You For This Moment and reflects the musings of a leader on his relationship to the world, illness, and social conventions… where economic and mental depression feed into each other. Many drawings in this series use uniquely shaped mats that intervene at the heart of the image and its narrative.

Adrien Savigny sculpts dreams with a delicate precision that bridges the ephemeral and the tangible. His graphite-rendered architectures invite us into fantastical realms, spaces where the immaterial reigns supreme. Each drawing, an intricately woven narrative, reveals cities suspended in a timeless dimension—labyrinthine staircases, ethereal towers, and naive gothic balustrades rise like monuments to the imagination.
Savigny’s mastery lies in his obsessive attention to detail, a craftsmanship that transforms his paper-bound creations into immersive maquettes of otherworldly grandeur. Navigating these surreal constructs, we encounter echoes of forgotten times and places that never were, yet feel deeply familiar. His work captures the fragility of human ambition, balancing its monumental aspirations with the fleeting essence of memory and dream.
Between sleep and reverie, Savigny’s architectures house our ghosts—those lingering between the tiles and arches, whispering tales of nobility and decay. His work compels us to contemplate our own fragility and significance, offering a poetic journey that draws us closer to the infinite. Through spirals, lines, and arabesques, he beckons us to reconnect—with ourselves, with the fleeting, and with eternity.
Berta Fischer is a German contemporary artist known for her abstract, luminous sculptures made from materials like plexiglass and PVC. Her work explores themes of lightness, transparency, and interaction with light, creating vibrant, dynamic pieces that engage with their surroundings.
Notable exhibitions include « Light Games » at Kunstmuseum Stuttgart (2012), a group show highlighting artists who work with light and materials; her solo exhibition at Galerie Barbara Weiss in Berlin (2017), featuring intricate and immersive new sculptures; and « Plasticity » at Kunsthaus Zürich (2020), a thematic exhibition showcasing artists exploring organic forms and synthetic materials.
Fischer continues to push the boundaries of synthetic materials, transforming the ordinary into extraordinary artistic forms.
Imi Knoebel’s Kinderstern is an homage to children. For his upcoming exhibition at von Bartha in Basel, the German artist presents a new Kinderstern series comprising more than a hundred individual works on aluminum. The funds raised by the sales of the new series allow the association Kinderstern e.V. – an initiative by the artist and Carmen Knoebel – to support children in need.
Accompanying the Kinderstern presentation are new and recent works from other series, such as Archetyp and Etcetera, turning the gallery space into the most extensive presentation of the Düsseldorf-based artist at von Bartha to this date.
